Located deep within Shiga Kogen, Hotaru Onsen sits peacefully along the upper Kakuma River between Mt. Kasagatake and Mt. Yokote. Surrounded by the pristine nature of Joshin'etsu-kogen National Park, it offers a serene escape in the highlands.
Situated in the scenic Kumanoyu area at an elevation of 1,800m, Hotel & Onsen 2307 Shigakogen sits at the base of Mt. Yokote, which towers at 2,307m. Here, you can enjoy the ultimate mountain retreat.
With its majestic mountains rising over 2,000 meters and its emerald, mystical waters, Shiga Kogen is a breathtaking sanctuary of natural wonders.
The surrounding area is famous for having the highest altitude for firefly sightings in Japan. Furthermore, it boasts Japan's longest periods for both the larvae's emergence onto land and the fireflies' active flight season.
The area is also famous as a habitat for Genji fireflies, a designated Natural Monument. These fireflies are known not only for their beauty but also for their remarkably long adult lifespan.
It is said that the name "Hotaru Onsen" (Firefly Hot Spring) originates from this unique environment, and the fireflies can be viewed from mid-July to mid-August.
